Grade 4

Other martial arts experience: Karate for about 3 months when I was 14.

Hobbies: Golf, Bushwalking, Spearfishing, Movies, Xbox, Reading.

Occupation: Sales Consultant, selling office equipment.

Why I learn Wing Chun: I went to high school in the 70’s and really enjoyed watching action and martial arts movies as a teenager, especially Bruce Lee movies. I found out that Bruce Lee spent more time on Wing Chun than any other style and was impressed by its directness and ability to generate power so I thought I’d have a look at it. Although Wing Chun is actually the opposite to the choreography you see in the movies I’ve found it to be a very practical style that can be used in a realistic self-defence situation on the street or in a confined space. It’s a great style for real close combat fighting.

Why I train at Hornsby Wing Chun: Initially I was training in the city for about 12 months and changed to Hornsby because it was close to home. This was a great move, not so much because of location but because the class sizes are small and the level of personal attention by Instructor Mark is excellent. I’d certainly travel a lot further for this style of training.

What my training has given me: The exciting realisation that as I get older I will only get better because Wing Chun is based on developing skill & technique to improve rather than by developing yourself physically or by brute strength. Wing Chun has also given me more confidence through the skill I developed to generate much more force and power than I had before.
