I had always had an interest in martial arts, and I thought it was time I give it a go. There is a big difference between learning and copying Wing Chun. At Hornsby, you get a sound foundation in the true principles of the art which sends you on a path to discover your full potential. Wing Chun Rocks!!!

I have improved posture, realistic self-defence skills, and an overall feeling of relaxation.

Ben

Having looked into the pros and cons of a number of martial arts, I decided that Wing Chun was, for me, the most effective. This was because of the practical nature of the art which is based on simple principles and techniques that can be effective in real life situations - even for beginners.

Braden

I had never really done any martial arts before. When I hurt my knee playing soccer I decided to look for something a bit different that may be less taxing on my knee. Wing Chun offered a chance to try something a bit different and provide some exercise.

The biggest thing I have learned is being able to move in different ways. I feel that I have greater control over the movements of my body. It’s also good to know that I now have a basic level of self defence, something I didn’t have before starting training

Jeremy

Satisfaction and confidence, as well as enjoyment in each class.

John

The smaller classes are more engaging and fascinating. Instructor Mark has a comprehensive understanding of Wing Chun and generates a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for learning.

Melvin

Wing Chun is fun and much more relaxing than homework. I guess it’s a good stress reliever. I’m also more coordinated and I think my posture has improved.

Paul

Effective close quarter combat techniques - superior to both Tae-kwon-do and Karate.

Troy

I was a couch potato for quite some time and decided to explore life off that couch. Amazing what things can be found there.

I’m more relaxed in everyday life and have improved coordination and posture.

Yoke-Inn

Wing Chun is suitable for shorter people who are not very strong and has given me increased confidence and co-ordination.

Other martial arts experience: None.

Hobbies: Martial Arts, Mechanics, Music, Fitness, TV, Movies, Cinema, The Internet

Occupation: Light Vehicle Motor Mechanic

Why I learn Wing Chun: Wanted a focus in my every day to day life, something to work on and progress on, not just my job but me as a person and martial arts is that focus.

Why I train at Hornsby Wing Chun: Primarily the training times are compatible with work, but now that I have trained here for some time - for the skill of the instructor & the other students, not to mention the friendly environment & excellent tuition in Wing Chun Kung Fu

What my training has given me: My training has made me come to realise how much thought, focus, concentration, dedication, discipline and also respect for the founders & masters, instructors & students of this martial art & others is reflected in the undertakings of one who trains in martial arts.

Email Address: joeytwnty2@hotmail.com

Additional Comments: There is no time which is better for you than right now to train in the martial arts, the benefits far outweigh any costs. It has given me a great deal of discipline in the ability to concentrate & focus which has helped me a lot with pursuits in life.

Grade 4

Other martial arts experience: Karate for 2 years.

Hobbies: Cooking, movies, ‘growing’ 3 kids.

Occupation: Right now doing the full time mum thing but in previous life have done grass-roots community work, teaching, and policy development in youth, women and ethnic affairs.

Why I learn Wing Chun: I have always wanted to do a Chinese-style martial art and Wing Chun was particularly attractive because of its focus on skill, practicality and efficiency of movement rather than brute strength. Given that it was also invented by a woman, it is probably more suitable for women than other martial arts.

Why I train at Hornsby Wing Chun: Convenient class times and location. Friendly, non-macho atmosphere. While I do miss the social interaction of bigger classes, the faster pace of learning and greater individual attention from the instructor afforded by smaller class sizes makes up for this.

What my training has given me: Time away from the kids! Also improved coordination, posture and faster reflexes.

Grade 4

Other martial arts experience: Karate for about 3 months when I was 14.

Hobbies: Golf, Bushwalking, Spearfishing, Movies, Xbox, Reading.

Occupation: Sales Consultant, selling office equipment.

Why I learn Wing Chun: I went to high school in the 70’s and really enjoyed watching action and martial arts movies as a teenager, especially Bruce Lee movies. I found out that Bruce Lee spent more time on Wing Chun than any other style and was impressed by its directness and ability to generate power so I thought I’d have a look at it. Although Wing Chun is actually the opposite to the choreography you see in the movies I’ve found it to be a very practical style that can be used in a realistic self-defence situation on the street or in a confined space. It’s a great style for real close combat fighting.

Why I train at Hornsby Wing Chun: Initially I was training in the city for about 12 months and changed to Hornsby because it was close to home. This was a great move, not so much because of location but because the class sizes are small and the level of personal attention by Instructor Mark is excellent. I’d certainly travel a lot further for this style of training.

What my training has given me: The exciting realisation that as I get older I will only get better because Wing Chun is based on developing skill & technique to improve rather than by developing yourself physically or by brute strength. Wing Chun has also given me more confidence through the skill I developed to generate much more force and power than I had before.
